The Cooperativa Agraria de Servicios Multiples El Milagro is made up of 177 smallholder organic coffee producers in northern Peru. This small but growing cooperative is mostly comprised of farms that are only 3 hectares in size. By directly selling their coffee to buyers, they are working towards improving the livelihoods of their farmers through achieving fairer prices.
Located in the Cajamarca region of Northern Peru, this region extends north to the Ecuadorian border. Described as a privileged climate, the area boasts a wooded mountainous landscape, with many natural resources. The town of San Jose de Lourdes is accessible only by cable car or raft, which makes it logistically difficult.
Despite the difficult location, they have an office and cupping lab, and have recently invested in enclosed drying structures. This has allowed members to improve their drying techniques and subsequently increase cup quality as well. Since 2015, the cooperative has also begun a micro-lot program.
Ethically sourced specialty coffee: Our specialty coffee selection is carefully curated to take your tastebuds on an adventure. We place a major focus on traceable coffee sources to support family businesses and farmers that adhere to international standards on sustainability, better pricing, and quality.
Zero Waste Roasting: Our coffee is roasted using locally collected, leftover coffee grounds in the UK. The collected coffee grounds are turned into coffee logs, which are then used as a form of biofuel to power the coffee roaster. Any leftover heat is rerouted to heat the warehouse.
100% Plastic Free & Compostable: Alpaca Coffee is 100% plastic-free, from our labels and our bags, all the way to our shipping boxes and compostable tape. Our coffee pouches are also home compostable. Once you’re done, you can rip them up and pop them in your council food waste bin or your home compost.
- Offsetting Our Carbon Footprint: For every 10 bags of coffee sold, Alpaca Coffee will plant one tree in the Amazon Rainforest with the leading environmental NGO - One Tree Planted. By doing so, we offset any carbon that is emitted along our coffee supply chain and support local communities.
Any tips or key information to help shops sell to consumers?

- To dispose of our bags simply tear it up and add to the council food waste bin, or to the home compost
How have you made it more sustainable than other similar products?
Our coffees are roasted using leftover coffee grounds, which have been turned into biofuel to power the coffee roaster. Our packaging is 100% plastic free and compostable, from the coffee valve, to the zipper, to the inside lining. We are using the market's only coffee valve, which ensures our freshly roasted beans stay fresh.
